MTD Compliance Checklist β April 2026
For self-employed fitness professionals earning Β£50,000+
Confirm your qualifying income
Check your 2024β25 tax records. Self-employment + property income over Β£50,000 means you're in scope from 6 April 2026.
STEP 1
Register for MTD for ITSA via HMRC Government Gateway
One-time step. Do this before your start date β HMRC needs time to process the registration. Allow at least 2β4 weeks.
DEADLINE: Before 6 Apr 2026
Choose HMRC-approved MTD-compatible software
You must use software that connects to the HMRC MTD API. Generic spreadsheets and accounting tools without API access don't qualify.
STEP 3
Know your four quarterly submission deadlines
Q1: 5 August 2026 Β· Q2: 5 November 2026 Β· Q3: 5 February 2027 Β· Q4: 5 May 2027. Each submission covers 3 months of income and expenses.
Q1 DUE: 5 Aug 2026
First quarterly submission: 5 August 2026
Covers 6 April β 5 July 2026. Submit via your MTD-compatible software β not through the HMRC website directly.
FIRST DEADLINE
Categorise all income types correctly
Sessions, packages, memberships, merchandise, and referral income each need separate categorisation for HMRC.
STEP 6
Track all allowable expenses in real time
Equipment, travel, CPD, insurance, marketing, software. Miss an expense and you overpay tax.
TAX SAVINGS
Understand the 4-point penalty threshold
4 missed submissions in 24 months = Β£200 fine. Then Β£200 for every additional miss.

Q1 DUE: 5 Aug 2026
First quarterly submission: 5 August 2026
Covers 6 April β 5 July 2026. Submit via your MTD-compatible software β not through the HMRC website directly.
FIRST DEADLINE
Categorise all income types correctly from day one
Sessions, packages, memberships, merchandise, and referral income each need separate categorisation. Getting this wrong means manual corrections at year-end.
RECORD-KEEPING
Track all allowable expenses in real time β not at year-end
Equipment, travel to client locations, CPD courses, professional insurance, marketing, software subscriptions. Every untracked expense is tax you didn't need to pay.
TAX SAVINGS
Understand the 4-point penalty threshold
1 point per missed quarterly submission. Hit 4 points in 24 months = Β£200 penalty. Then Β£200 for every additional missed submission. Points can take 2 years of clean record to clear.
PENALTY AVOIDANCE
Prepare your End of Period Statement by 31 January
Annual summary submitted after your 4 quarterly updates. Confirms your total income and expenses for the tax year. Separate from quarterly submissions.
ANNUAL: 31 Jan
Test your HMRC API connection before your first deadline
Don't leave this to the day before 5 August. Verify your software is authorised to submit to HMRC on your behalf β allow time to troubleshoot if there are issues.
